The recession is finally moving along – will your star workers follow suit?
Even the best employees have been hunkering down lately for their own financial security. But as the economy picks up, their prospects are looking better and better. The latest surveys indicate that a staggering 84 percent of U.S. employees (six in seven!) plan to look for new jobs in 2011 – and only 5 percent are content to stick with their current positions.
Your biggest risk? Losing your most valuable, dependable employees (the ones who'll have absolutely no trouble finding new jobs). Retaining them will involve more than just dollars and cents. You must rely on a wide range of strategies – from engaged supervisors and effective recognition programs to training opportunities and one-on-one coaching – to keep them from jumping ship.

Theresa Murphy is an independent human resources consultant based in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is also an instructor with Johnston County Community College in Smithfield, NC, teaching courses on HR development, harassment prevention, and business management.
