Employee Retention: How to Keep (and Refocus) Your Best Employees in a Recovering Economy

The recession is finally moving along – will your star workers follow suit?

Even the best employees have been hunkering down lately for their own financial security. But as the economy picks up, their prospects are looking better and better. The latest surveys indicate that a staggering 84 percent of U.S. employees (six in seven!) plan to look for new jobs in 2011 – and only 5 percent are content to stick with their current positions.

Your biggest risk? Losing your most valuable, dependable employees (the ones who'll have absolutely no trouble finding new jobs). Retaining them will involve more than just dollars and cents. You must rely on a wide range of strategies – from engaged supervisors and effective recognition programs to training opportunities and one-on-one coaching – to keep them from jumping ship.

You and your colleagues will learn:

  • What's happening around the country right now with employee retention trends, as the economy continues recovering
  • The primary reasons (besides money) that your key workers will start searching for new jobs
  • Which training and mentoring strategies can build long-term relationships with your top employees
  • What you can do now – with limited time and funds – to strengthen bonds with these workers and build a positive culture for retention
  • How to enlist your supervisors in keeping workers engaged and focused on staying
  • The best ways to "take the temperature" of your employees who may be looking elsewhere – and to provide them coaching and solicit feedback without turning them off in the process
  • How you can recognize and reward your best workers, even when your budgets are tight
