Onboard First Aid: Immediate Actions (DVD)

Parts 1 and 2 of the DVD media feature medical professionals portraying shipboard personnel as they demonstrate the immediate actions required for stabilizing the condition of an ill or injured crewmember.

Part 3 is an audio-visual test that allows the viewer to evaluate his or her understanding of the subject matter, as a means of boosting retention and measuring comprehension. Part 4 is a Workbook, which serves as a study guide that can be issued to crew personnel. Included in the Workbook are test forms that can be used for scoring and certification of those who successfully complete the program.

Onboard First Aid: Immediate Actions is targeted at entry-level personnel. It serves as a companion to the 10-title Maritime Medical Emergencies Instructional Series, intended for senior officers, which demonstrates comprehensive treatment procedures and case management strategies for the injuries and illnesses that commonly occur at sea.

The media is based on actual incidents drawn from the case files of Maritime Health Services, Inc. (MHS), a Seattle firm that has provided professional medical consultation to vessels at sea on more than 15,000 occasions.

Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping require all shipboard personnel to be capable of undertaking an effective immediate action in response to a medical emergency.

Junior officers must meet an intermediate level of emergency medical proficiency. Senior officers designated as persons in charge of onboard medical care must be proficient at advanced treatment procedures and case management strategies.

According the U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Newsletter, Onboard First Aid: Immediate Actions and the companion Maritime Medical Emergencies programs are important resources for vessel operators striving to comply with Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping requirements. Most major U.S. ship operators now utilize the videotapes, and the Maritime Administration has placed them aboard the vessels in the nations Ready Reserve Fleet.

Photographed aboard deep-sea vessels ranging from tugs and fishing vessels to container ships and tankers, the media demonstrates professionally executed emergency medical techniques and procedures in documentary fashion, with a minimum of theory. The instructional content consists of highly realistic emergency scenarios, with extensive use of digital video effects to enhance the demonstrations of emergency medical procedures. The Workbook is comprehensively illustrated with key images excerpted from the videotapes.

Onboard First Aid: Immediate Actions also forms part of the Basic Safety Training Package, which includes companion modules titled Basic Fire Fighting, Personal Survival Techniques and Personal Safety & Social Responsibility, plus the Interactive Training, Drilling & Assessment Compact Disk. The Package has been designed as the most cost effective approach to meeting the Onboard Training, Drilling and Assessment Requirements established by the ISM and STCW codes. VHS refers to videotape. Onboard Lockout -Tagout (DVD)

Onboard Lockout-Tagout depicts real-world lockout-tagout procedures aboard vessels ranging from harbor tugs to super tankers. Lockout-tagout refers to the set of procedures that is essential for protecting personnel, vessels and the environment from damage caused by the inadvertent operation of onboard systems. Lockout ensures that mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic and pressure systems cannot be accidentally energized when personnel are in harm's way or equipment is at risk. Tagout alerts other crewmembers as to the status of a machine or system, about why it has been taken out of service, and the identity of the individual who has applied the lockout. The program is sponsored by a team of vessel operators: Alaska Tanker Company, Chevron Shipping, Crowley Marine Services and Foss Maritime Company. "These companies wanted a training resource that reflects onboard practice rather than the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations that apply to shoreside plants," according to producer John Sabella. "We scripted it in conjunction with the operations departments of the four companies, and photographed working engineers practicing lockout-tagout aboard their vessels. The fact is, there isn't a one-to-one correlation between the shoreside and at-sea workplaces, and up until now, there hasn't been a program on lockout-tagout that treats the subject matter from a marine perspective. Now, vessel personnel have an educational resource that demonstrates good shipboard practice in a maritime context.

Onboard Basic Safety Training Program - DVD

An instructional resource that combines broadcast quality media, pictorial workbooks and computer-based training now provides vessel operators with a cost-effective means of providing BST refresher training as required by the International Safety Management (ISM) and Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping (STCW) codes. Each audio-visual training course consists of a DVD and companion workbook covering the requirements established by Table VI of the STCW Code. Photographed aboard vessels ranging from sea-going tugs and fishing vessels to oil tankers and container ships, each module incorporates dramatic emergency scenarios and clearly illustrated response procedures.

The Interactive Training, Drilling & Assessment CD offers a mechanism for measuring and certificating crew comprehension of the subject matter and logging all drilling, training and assessment (testing) events that occur aboard the vessel. Crew members log onto the Test component of the software for assessment and certification of their competency in the four BST subject areas. Each test consists of 20 questions generated in random order to minimize test fraud. Each question includes a memory-enhancing video clip intended to boost content retention and enhance test performance. The software scores and certificates each test.

Vessel managers log onto the secure Training & Drilling Administrator or Test Administrator components of the software to log training and drilling events, maintain crewmember records, review crewmember test performance and generate real time reports in response to audits by in-house or external authorities.

Back Care for Maritime Industry - Program Set (DVD)

Back care for maritime industry offers comprehensive injury prevention and loss control recommendations for maritime employers who operate commercial vessels or shoreside production sites. The most common form of industrial injury, back sprains and strains cost maritime employers millions of dollars each year. They account for about a third of all workplace injuries and 40-60 percent of total injury costs. The hard physical work, the moving platforms and the cold, damp atmospheres that characterize the maritime workplace mean that back injuries are even a bigger problem for maritime employers than for industry in general. Back injuries can be extremely painful, and they hurt everyone. The worker faces pain, suffering, loss of income and perhaps even a long term disability, while the employer faces the high costs of worker's compensation, medical treatment, legal fees and insurance premiums.

Other hidden costs include the loss of an experienced worker and the cost of training his replacement, downtime, lost productivity, impaired quality control and the time required for supervisors to investigate the accident and contend with the paperwork. These indirect costs may be as much as four times more than the direct expenses. The good news is that a committed program of back injury management can dramatically reduce the frequency of injury within the maritime workplace. Back care for maritime industry is designed to educate both production and supervisory personnel about the how's and why's of back care.

Maritime Security Policies - DVD

This course provides an introduction to the relevant international conventions, codes, legislation, and regulations. The many resolutions and conventions that have been adopted by the International Maritime Organization—in order to prevent, deter, and mitigate threats to security in maritime transportation—are discussed, providing a historical perspective on the development of, and the objectives within, the ISPS Code.

In addition to a discussion of the ISPS Code, the student will also learn about national maritime security measures, including the United States Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA), the Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT), and the Container Security Inititiative (CSI).

In order to fully appreciate the complexities of these maritime security policies, the program will provide key definitions and clarifications of terms found I SOLAS Chapter XI-2, Regulation 1 and in the ISPS Code Part A, Section 2.

Finally, the student will hear about the potential legal implications of action or non-action by the Facility Security Officer & Ship Security Officer, as well as the requirements associated with the handling of sensitive security-related information and communications.

Length: 38 minutes

Security Training (Maritime) - DVD

This course provides the training requirements set out under the ISPS Code in Parts A and B of the Code. The instruction will help to clarify the specific training requirements required - by position; requirements for training; as well as who needs to be trained, what the training must consist of, and where the responsibility lies for the training of the various persons involved in the security organization.

Also included in this program is a primer for the Port Facility Security Officer and the Ship Security Officer on instructional techniques for security training and education.

The International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code, as well as the U.S. Maritime Transportation Security Act of 2002 (MTSA), requires specialized maritime security training for port facility and vessel personnel. This Maritime Security Management & Operations Compliance Series was specifically developed to meet the mandatory security standards set forth in the ISPS Code. Non-compliance with ISPS Code requirements can result in loss of revenue and the potential for increased liability in the event of a security incident.
