Diversity Challenges: What Would You Do? - DVD

Produced - 2007

This program is also available for online training - learn more!

Defining diversity and understanding how to navigate through a diverse workforce are two very different things. It is one thing to understand what diversity is, but it's another to hire and manage the human complexities of a diverse workforce.

In talking about diversity, we not only focus on the visible examples such as race, age, gender, and national origin, but also on not-so-visible examples such as personality style, style of interaction, lifestyle situations, education, work function, etc. It is the identification, acceptance and understanding of those differences and similarities that allow individuals to become aware of and fully use their talents and abilities to make unique contributions to workgroups and organizations.

Whether your organization already started a diversity initiative or you're just beginning to look at the effect diversity has on your productivity, this program is designed to give your organization a chance to discuss some real issues affecting your workforce.

By the end of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Define key terms: diversity, culture and cultural archives
  • Identify their personal cultural archives
  • Examine their personal archives and how they affect communication and workplace relationships
  • Recognize how differing cultural archives affect communication, relationships and ultimately productivity in the workplace.

Program includes: 16 minute DVD, Facilitator's Guide and PowerPoint Presentation.

Taking Charge of Change: The Healthcare Version (DVD)

Change often produces fear, uncertainty and resistance. But, with the proper tools and attitude, change can be a morale- and confidence-building experience. This video offers an important look into how to redefine our organizations and ourselves to accommodate current health care industry trends.

In all recorded history, there is no precedent for the massive change now sweeping over people in the United States and other industrialized nations. Technology, global competition and workforce diversity combine to place heavy demands upon everyone. There are new skills, roles, attitudes and rules. All are re-shaping business and personal life.

Most people see change as a profound challenge that they are not emotionally equipped to handle. While organizations implement strategic change through such programs as Total Quality Management, downsizing and retraining, the psychological effects of change upon people must be kept in constant focus. This film is a critically needed tool for teaching everyone in the organization how to understand change, embrace it and make it work to maximum advantage. The morale-building, confidence-building strategies shown in this film will dramatically raise productivity and speed the organization's progress in meeting its highest objectives. This emotionally involving film shows how to understand change as opportunity.

Viewers will learn to:

  • adapt to change
  • abandon limiting thought patterns and self-images
  • encourage employee involvement in the change process
  • embrace cooperation and productivity
  • overcome "survivor's guilt" after downsizing and more.

Compendium of Learning and Development Quizzes

By Sarah Cook

One of the many challenges you face as a trainer is getting employees to look at themselves, their skill gaps and their attitudes. This collection of 43 fun and creative quizzes is just what you need.

You’ll be amazed at how easy it is to find the perfect quiz. The quizzes are organized in alphabetical order. They also are grouped in nine easy-access topic areas: Communication skills, customer service, health and safety, leadership, performance management, personal development, teamwork, recruitment and selection, and training and development.

The quizzes are easy to administer in the classroom, too. Accompanying each quiz are suggested responses to the questions and helpful background information.

You’ll find quizzes that ask participants to fill in the blanks, choose from several answers, rank items and pick between true and false. Action plans can be developed immediately after most quizzes are completed and then evaluated. You can adapt each quiz to meet the specific needs of your group simply by changing wording, phrases or questions. You don’t have to be a professional trainer to use these quizzes. You could be a line manager, team leader – anyone who wants a fun and effective way to inspire learners to look inside and get to know themselves better.

Sample topics:

  • Action-centered leadership
  • Body language

Race Discrimination: How to Avoid the #1 Type of Bias Claim in America – And Avoid Costly Lawsuits

Race Discrimination Audio Conference and CD -

This program has been approved for 1.5 recertification credit hours toward PHR and SPHR recertification through the Human Resource Certification Institute (HRCI). For more information about certification or recertification, please visit the HRCI homepage at www.hrci.org. The use of this seal is not an endorsement by HRCI of the quality of the program. Description:

Race discrimination is the #1 type of claim filed with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) - more than a third of the agency’s entire caseload in recent years. And, the stakes for employers keep getting higher. EEOC broke records in 2008 with the dollar amounts of its race discrimination settlements with employers.

In 2009, the experts say, you’ll face even greater risks from race-related claims and lawsuits. Recent surveys show that 3 in 10 Americans have admitted feelings of racial prejudice, and they’re bringing those feelings into your workplace. The souring economy may encourage even more disgruntled workers to file claims seeking financial settlements.

Plus, employment lawyers have recently identified new types of race bias claims that trip up even savvy employers - from lawsuits that combine racial and gender discrimination allegations to accusations that you didn’t hire certain workers due to the content of their video resumes.

Join us for this important audio conference on February 20, as our expert speakers explain the do's and don’ts of recognizing and preventing race bias in your workplace. They’ll discuss not only the legal issues and risks involved in race discrimination claims, but also the practical ways you can train your supervisors and your frontline workers to stamp out these problems before they mushroom into lawsuits. You’ll also have the chance to submit the race bias questions that have been troubling you directly to our experts – anonymously, if you wish.

Speaker(s):

Dennis A. Davis, Ph.D., serves as director of client training for the nationwide employment law firm Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, PC. He is a nationally recognized expert in the areas of conflict resolution in the workplace, cultural diversity, professional interaction, sexual harassment, and violence in the workplace. An accomplished speaker and author on HR issues, Davis has developed numerous tools for managers such as the Behavioral Risk Management Program (an aid to help organizations reduce the risk and exposure of inappropriate behavior in the workplace). He has conducted extensive behavioral risk management trainings to share effective communication techniques, behavior modification, and employee motivation for private companies, government agencies, and university personnel. Davis earned his doctoral degree in psychology from the United States International University.

Joseph L. Beachboard, Esq., is a partner at the Los Angeles office of law firm Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, PC. A longtime employment and labor relations attorney, he speaks regularly before human resource, personnel, and employer groups on cutting-edge employment law topics. He is a founding member and the executive director of the Management Employment Law Roundtable, a nationwide, invitation-only organization of management, labor, and employment attorneys. He earned his law degree at Vanderbilt University School of Law.

You and your colleagues will learn:

  • What constitutes race bias, and why the definition matters
  • How race bias can lead to problems in many different phases of the employment relationship - from recruiting, hiring, and promotion decisions to compensation levels and terminations
  • The seemingly innocuous ways in which race bias can lead to big trouble (e.g., hiring workers based on video resumes, employment tests, or credit scores that arguably affect minority groups disparately)
  • What the EEOC’s new E-RACE (Eradicating Racism and Colorism from Employment) antidiscrimination campaign means for you as an employer
  • Brand-new types of race bias claims, from “sex plus” gender bias lawsuits to allegations of minority employers’ hiring exclusively within their own ethnic groups
  • Which strategies for creating a racially diverse, hostile-free workplace have proved the most practical and cost-effective for employers
  • How you can train your managers and your frontline employees to recognize and report race bias issues before they get out of hand
  • The biggest mistakes employers make in dealing with race bias on the job – and how you can avoid them

This animated program tackles the tough subject of stereotyping in a delightful way by looking at some different "birds" in the workplace. It makes us do some soul-searching about the casual way we limit ourselves and others through stereotyping.

We "pigeon-hole" others when we overlook their unique abilities, talents, personalities, and backgrounds. We do it to ourselves, too - when we impose limits and cheat ourselves of new experiences, challenging opportunities, and the fulfillment of our undeveloped potential.

Though animated, this training tool is no flight of fancy. It's a critical component of training in today's changing workplace. Workgroups, committees, and executive teams will benefit from this program, as will any group interested in mobilizing the talents of all its members.

PigeonHoled in the Land of Penguins will help team members recognize pigeon-holing, understand its high cost, and learn how to change the pattern. By tapping into the full creativity of everyone on a team, we open ourselves up to significant breakthroughs in innovation, productivity and team effectiveness.

Participants will learn:

  • why pigeonhole-ing is so common
  • the consequences and high cost of pigeon-holing themselves and others
  • how to free people from pigeon-holes, allowing them greater freedom to create and contribute

The culture of any workplace is shaped by its people. It’s always unique, because people are unique, and as personnel changes in a workplace, so too does the culture – often in small, but significant ways.

The elements that build a workplace culture are common to all places of employment, and they permeate all aspects of operations, as well as impacting on image, within organizations and outside of them. Creating and building an appropriate and positive workplace culture is paramount to success. This program covers important aspects of identifying, building and changing a workplace culture. We hear from three different organizations about their corporate cultures – multimedia games designer and developer Firemint, surf and ski wear giant Oakley; and Australia’s Bendigo Bank. It is an ideal resource for prompting thought, discussion and action on this important topic.

Men and women live in different cultures. As a result they have different rules regarding what is considered "appropriate" adult behavior. Unfortunately, neither gender is aware of these disparate norms and rules and often misread what is being communicated. Consequently, what seems natural to one gender culture can seem mysterious and baffling to the other. The differences are not right or wrong but they can result in confusion and conflict. By making these Invisible Rules visible, Dr. Heim provides the basis for better understanding, communication and teamwork.
