Management / SupervisionManaging People Who Work Remotely 7/27/2010 - Live Audio Conference ![]() Featuring John Cleese People do need to know what is going on, especially if there's something afoot that could affect them personally. And once the rumour mill starts grinding it's very difficult to stop - and even harder to correct any misinformation once it has gained currency. The grapevine shows what can happen when people suspect the worst and start to make up things for themselves. One of the largest customers of a fictional company has called in the receivers; the MD has made contingency plans and is confident that new contracts will forestall the need for compulsory redundancies. The message that managers were to pass on was one of reassurance but the production head doesn't brief his team properly and their fears mount, fuelled by the fact that people in other departments seem to know more than they do. Only when a key member of staff hands in his notice does he realise his mistake and the importance of structured communication . The benefits

![]() Produced - 2007 What’s every top manager’s secret to success? In a word: delegate, delegate, delegate. But getting work done through others can often be difficult because it inevitably involves a loss of control. This program outlines a solid process for delegating and gives valuable insight to both new and experienced managers. Delegating responsibility is a dance - a delicate partnership between manager and subordinate involving trust, authority and above all, communication. The Dashboard tells the compelling story of one company's unique approach to gathering and distributing information about the health of their organization. Younger Brothers Construction was struggling to make the transition from a good company to a great one. People throughout the company had different ideas of the company's goals, and while they "measured everything that moved", they didn't always know how to act on their findings. Working together, the management team at Younger Brothers set an over-arching goal for the company: to build homes faster, better, and cheaper. To reach that goal, they realized they needed measures, but first they had to prioritize and narrow down the many metrics they currently tracked. After gaining consensus on what measures mattered the most in the achievement of their goal, Younger Brothers created their "dashboard" - a single graphical tool which displayed key factors describing the company's current performance. Like the dashboard of a car, this tool provided an instant reading of how they were doing. If the needle was in the green, that metric was good. If it was in the red, problems needed to be solved…immediately. It was distributed to employees throughout the company and everyone knew how to read the gauges and act on those readings. This approach changed the way Younger Brothers did business and the results were dramatic. Their productivity and profits rose, safety improved, and everyone could see how they contributed to the company's success. After viewing The Dashboard program and participating in the workshop exercises, trainees will: Recognize the need for measurement within their department or organization Identify metrics that can lead to improved performance Begin to set up a plan to measure and respond to selected metrics. Program Includes: 7.5 minute VHS or DVD, Leader's Guide with reproducible participant worksheets, CD-ROM with PowerPoint Presentation and worksheets

![]() 1. Seven common strategic errors that lead to business failure. 2. Why bad strategies happen to good people. 3. How to encourage devil’s advocacy before it’s too late. While we are inspired by business success stories, we are educated by business failures. Chunka Mui and Paul Carroll researched 750 of the most significant business failures of the past quarter-century and found the Number 1 cause of failure was not sloppy execution, poor leadership or bad luck. It was, instead, misguided strategy. Mui gives examples of the seven most common strategic failure patterns: illusions of synergy, misjudged adjacencies, faulty financial engineering and others. He explains that each pattern has predictable red flags. Human beings are hard-wired for bad decision making in complex situations, notes Mui. We hone in on answers before examining all the facts, and then seek evidence to confirm our answers. We are adversely influenced by emotion, loyalties, and group think. However, decision making can be improved when we encourage conflict and question our assumptions. A devil’s advocate review should be built in early to the strategy process, and again at the key design stages and when near completion for a last chance to review the full strategy. Chunka Mui is a fellow with Diamond Management & Technology Consultants and a partner with Cornerloft Partners, LLC. He co-authored with Larry Downes “Unleashing the Killer App, Digital Strategies for Market Dominance,” and co-authored with Paul Carroll “Billion Dollar Lessons.” He holds a BS in Computer Science and Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
