A Class Divided with Jane Elliott - DVD

In 1968, the day after Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated, the students in a small third-grade class couldn’t understand why he had been killed. King had been the “Hero of the Month” the previous February. Their teacher, Jane Elliott, wanted to help them understand the enormity of his death. She decided to try a daring classroom exercise on the meaning of discrimination, as detailed in the classic film, THE OF THE STORM.

What she taught those children and the effect her lesson had on them throughout their lives is explored in this award winning follow-up, A CLASS DIVIDED.

First broadcast in 1985, A CLASS DIVIDED was hailed as a “riveting, and potentially life-changing hour” and was honored with the Sidney Hillman Prize and an Emmy Award for outstanding informational programming. Over the years, A CLASS DIVIDED has become a classic – a powerful exploration into the nature of prejudice which has been used in classrooms, corporations, prisons and other governmental and educational settings.

The Eye of the Storm with Jane Elliott - DVD

Following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jane Elliott, a third grade teacher in an all-white, all-Christian small town, wanted to teach her class what it feels like to be discriminated against based on a physical characteristic over which one has no control.

She divided her students into two groups: those with brown eyes, and those with blue eyes.

DAY ONE: She tells the class the “truth” about brown eyed people: that they’re lazy, stupid, dirty … all of the stereotypes Americans hold about people of color.

In a matter of minutes, blue eyed students begin to get the gleam of power in their eyes. Brown eyed students sink in their chairs, and their test scores decline.

DAY TWO: Elliott introduces a twist. She tells the class that she made a mistake; blue eyed people are the inferior ones.

The cycle begins again. Once both groups of students have been on the receiving end of discrimination, Elliott brings them together to talk about how they felt and help them draw connections between their feelings that day and racism in the outside world.

The Angry Eye with Jane Elliott - DVD

Hailed as a “fascinating revisit” to the famous 1970 blue eyed/ brown eyed exercise in discrimination by Jane Elliott, this film documents the effects of racial prejudice with startling force and emotional intensity. Taking pigmentation – in this case, eye color – as an arbitrary dividing line, Jane Elliott builds a microcosm of contemporary American society, compelling her more privileged blue eyed participants to live in another world for the longest two and a half hours of their lives.

THE ANGRY EYE skillfully interweaves the young adults in the exercise with post-session interviews that show the participants struggling to come to terms with their recent experiences. Through the intense and often painful emotions that the exercise provokes shines a hope that, someday, we overcome the capricious lines that divide us – if only we can learn to accept and appreciate our differences.

Eye Opener with Jane Elliott - DVD

If you think "it couldn't happen here" or "it wouldn't happen now", this may prove to be a bit of an "Eye Opener"! Jane Elliott, the internationally acclaimed diversity champion, conducts her "Blue-Eyed, Brown-Eyed" exercise in Glasgow with thirty-five volunteers from across the United Kingdom.

Many of the blue-eyed participants were shocked at their own reactions to what for many of them was the new experience of being powerless. Many of the brown-eyed participants were shocked at how easy they found it to go along with what was happening, even though they knew it was wrong.

They all now have a better understanding of the systematic nature of racism, as well as the awareness of their own actions - or inactions - can reinforce and perpetuate it.

"Eye Opener" shows this exercise is as relevant and necessary in the UK today as it was in Riceville, Iowa more than thirty years ago.

Indecently Exposed with Jane Elliott - DVD

"I'm your resident bitch for the day - welcome to the workshop!" - Anti-racism expert Jane Elliott. That's how anti-racism expert Jane Elliott describes her role in this reality-based documentary that challenges Canadian attitudes towards Native Canadians.

"Even nice Canadians are racist..." With cameras rolling, she divides the 22 unsuspecting participants by eye color - blue eyes in one group, brown eyes (many of them Native Canadian) in the other. Elliott turns the tables on the participants, treating the blue eyes as "persons of color", confronting and browbeating them, while the brown eyes are treated with respect. Filmed in Regina, Sask., Indecently Exposed illustrates and exposes how systematic racism continues to thrive in Canada today.

Powerful insights into the personal lives of the participants combined with the intensity of the workshop experience, create an engrossing emotional and psychological drama as the blue eyes learn what it feels like to be a target of discrimination. The experience causes many of the participants to re-evaluate their behavior and think about change.

The goal, Elliott says, is to find even one person who is willing to stand up and change things, to become an activist, to do something about the problem. As brown-eyed Clayton Maxxi puts it best: "We wish this never existed, that it was just a movie, but it's real!"
